A New Year and New Plans

 A year has past and a new intern has arrived. The new Intern Mike Ribblett is a University of Maryland student studying Ornamental Horticulture. Mike is helping out Dave and learnering from Dave all there is to know about Urban Farming on the AAUFRC.

Since Mike's arrival (and our last blog post) many things have been happening. We updated our plan for this years Planting experience and here is what we are working with so far!

The first course of action for this year was moving our electric fence. We moved it to be around the entire planting area so it now covers the rows of mixed vegatables and pumpkinks and gourds. We had some issues with a not-so-friendly ground hog and a pack of deer which caused us to move our electric fence to keep out the pests.


Here is Mike putting out and testing the new section of electric fence so that way we know it works.

 Today at the AAUFRC we had our first harvest of hops! Pherm Brewery asked for 1lb of fresh hops for their beer, a number which we met seven fold. We gave them 5.5lbs of the Cascade variety which is the leading industry standard variety, and we gave them 2lbs of the Comet variety. Our hops really amazed us with how much they produced in their first year, typically you would not see numbers like this until year two or three! While we were out with the hops we also fixed the post that had broken in our storm last Tuesday. We used wood glue and screws in some extra 2x4s to hold it all together.

 Here at the AAUFRC we collect moths! The moth traps we had on site were collecting corn moths to give us data to share with farmers and to help us to know when to spray for each different type. The three types we were collecting were Corn Earworm, Fall Armyworm, and Western Bean Cutworm. The Fall Armyworm and Western Bean Cutworm traps did not collect very many moths and have been taken down due to their end of season. The Corn Earworm trap will remain up until the end of September when it's season is over. The Corn Earworm has been our biggest issue, but even so, due to this being our first year with our corn our numbers have been very low compared to other farmers in Maryland.

We had a busy week here at the farm as we had a water pipe laid to connect to our field on Friday the 15th. We filled the hole in on Tuesday, fixing a leak that sprang. The vineyard and the hops yard also got hoed in preparation for spraying herbicides and fungicides today. On Wednesday we restrung the hops yard as much as we could with the rope we had on hand, more rope has been ordered to finish that job in the coming week.
