The AAUFRC corn is ready for harvest! We are growing 6 varieties of open pollenated corn: Wapsie Valley, Ohio Blue, Truckers Favorite, Lancaster Sure Crop, Hickory King White, and Floriani Red Flint. None of the varieties are sweet corn, all of them are milling and heirloom corn. A big thank you to Herb Reed for taking the lead on the corn project!
Today at the AAUFRC we had our first harvest of hops! Pherm Brewery asked for 1lb of fresh hops for their beer, a number which we met seven fold. We gave them 5.5lbs of the Cascade variety which is the leading industry standard variety, and we gave them 2lbs of the Comet variety. Our hops really amazed us with how much they produced in their first year, typically you would not see numbers like this until year two or three! While we were out with the hops we also fixed the post that had broken in our storm last Tuesday. We used wood glue and screws in some extra 2x4s to hold it all together.
