Today at the AAUFRC we had our first harvest of hops! Pherm Brewery asked for 1lb of fresh hops for their beer, a number which we met seven fold. We gave them 5.5lbs of the Cascade variety which is the leading industry standard variety, and we gave them 2lbs of the Comet variety. Our hops really amazed us with how much they produced in their first year, typically you would not see numbers like this until year two or three! While we were out with the hops we also fixed the post that had broken in our storm last Tuesday. We used wood glue and screws in some extra 2x4s to hold it all together.

Going to Pherm Brewing!
On July 18th Mike and Brian visited Pherm Brewing Company in Crofton Maryland! Pherm Brewing is a local craft brewery which makes, sells, and cans in their building. They collaborate with local farmers to produce fresh high quality grain and produce to be used in their brews. During this visit Mike learned all there is to know about making beer (more soecifically an IPA). It was very rewarding to see all of the hardwork that everyone put into growing the hops and peppers be used to create something new and unique. Below is a collection of photos of the beer making process and of Mike and Brian helping out Henry (Owner and operator) to make an IPA.
Here at the AAUFRC we collect moths! The moth traps we had on site were collecting corn moths to give us data to share with farmers and to help us to know when to spray for each different type. The three types we were collecting were Corn Earworm, Fall Armyworm, and Western Bean Cutworm. The Fall Armyworm and Western Bean Cutworm traps did not collect very many moths and have been taken down due to their end of season. The Corn Earworm trap will remain up until the end of September when it's season is over. The Corn Earworm has been our biggest issue, but even so, due to this being our first year with our corn our numbers have been very low compared to other farmers in Maryland.
